Accountant - 6 Month Contract

Reporting to the Director, Finance & Corporate Services the Accountant will work closely with the finance team to ensure all accounting entries and transactions are accurate and completed in a timely manner, as well as assist the Director in improving finance processes, procedures and internal controls.

About the Opportunity

  • Work closely with the Financial Analyst and Director, Finance and Corporate Services
  • Verify, allocate, post and reconcile accounts payables and receivables entries
  • Prepare and post all General Ledger entries
  • Produce accounting reports and present their results to the Director
  • Along with the Financial Analyst, review the company’s financial information and assist in summarizing the results and status
  • Identify financial or accounting errors and recommend appropriate corrections
  • Participate in setting financial standards and in the forecasting process
  • Prepare the organization’s financial statements
  • Prepare the GST/PST monthly returns
  • Assist with financial audits and the preparation of the organization’s tax returns
  • Support month-end and year-end close process
  • Prepare the annual Charity Return for the company
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director, Finance and Corporate Services
  • Perform full accounting cycle for the Foundation
  • Prepare tax receipts for Foundation donors
  • Communicate with the Foundation Board of Directors and volunteers
  • Prepares reports and schedules, when required
  • Perform month end process for the Foundation and the organization
  • Maintain continuity schedules
  • Provide assistance during quarter-ends, year-ends, and audits
  • Assist during the budget process
  • HST Filing and Reporting
  • Prepare the annual Charity Return for the Foundation
  • Assist the Financial Analyst with ministry reporting and submission as per the respective schedule and deadlines
  • Review sub-ledger entries and bank reconciliation
  • Adjust and correct entries, as required
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director, Finance and Corporate Services

About You

  • Successful completion of postsecondary education (Bachelor degree preferred)
  • CPA in Progress
  • Minimum of three (3) years accounting experience, preferably in ministry funded organization
  • Experience working in the not-for-profit sector including hospital/health care setting an asset
  • The equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures and practices
  • In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Familiarity with financial statement preparation
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
  • Hands-on experience with an accounting software package (Sage/ACCPAC is an asset)
  • Advanced MS Excel skills (VLookups and pivot tables in particular)
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills
  • Demonstrated communication (verbal/written/listening) skills with the ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy, decision-making, and analytical/problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with diverse teams and stakeholders on common issues and objectives

Pay Rate

$20 - $25/hour
