Payroll Accountant

The Payroll Accountant is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements, and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures in areas related primarily to payroll. Providing analytical support to manage the business is a key component of this role. This position is also responsible for the reconciliation of various payroll and tax accounts, will own specific accounting processes, and will participate in the internal reporting process required by the company. The Payroll Accountant will assist with annual payroll filing requirements and ensure compliance with payroll taxes, rules and regulations.

About the Opportunity

• Responsible for maintaining knowledge of Canadian taxation requirements for employment income, taxable benefits and payroll deductions
• Review and approve related vendor payments
• Reconciliation with government legislators company remittances and account balances
• Responsible for accurate and timely distribution of year-end documents and related documents (ie T2200 and TP-64)
• Establish a close working relationship with HR, Payroll processing teams, and Finance Leadership teams and
• Improve performance by evaluating processes to drive efficiencies
• Respond to employee enquiries in a timely manner
• Manage the employee expense report process, ensuring compliance with Company policies and limits
• Resolve payroll accounting discrepancies and irregularities
• Responsible for the preparation of payroll monthly summaries, analysis, reports and associated journal entries
• Responsible for the reconciliation and analysis of various GL accounts, own specific accounting processes and will be responsible for aspects of the financial reporting
• Assist with interim and year-end audits as required
• Prepare pension financial statements
• Ad-hoc reporting, projects and analysis

About You  

• Post-secondary education
• Minimum of 5 years related work experience; large company experience preferred
• Working towards or achievement of a professional accounting designation (CPA)
• Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation preferred
• In-depth knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation and requirements
• Excellent analytical skills
• Proficiency with MS Office
• Strong relationship-building and leadership skills
• Strong work ethic, sense of urgency, follow-up and follow-through skills

Salary Range
$65,000 - $75,000/year
