Director of Accounting

Our client is one of the largest real estate companies in Canada. The Director of Accounting is responsible for managing the accounting and reporting for a diverse portfolio of Canadian real estate assets, including some of Canada’s largest shopping malls. The Director’s team also includes the Lease Analysis function, which includes specialists in lease analysis and interpretation, as well as the Accounts Receivable function, which includes a team of five who oversee the A/R control function. This position will report directly to the VP and will be responsible for managing a team of up to 20 professionals. The key responsibilities will be the property accounting, reporting and review of various real estate assets, accounting for acquisitions and dispositions, preparation of statutory and audited financial statements, ensuring statutory and regulatory compliance, oversight of the A/R control function and lease analysis team and active participation/management of Special Projects. This position will also assist in the establishment of policies and procedures and systems to support the North American management function. The position requires strong leadership, analytical and communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization. The individual will also require knowledge of the real estate industry and be able to apply various reporting principles. The individual should have experience working in a large corporation with a complex organizational structure.

About the Opportunity  

Monthly and Quarterly Reporting

  • Oversight of accounting and management reporting for Canadian real estate assets including monthly reporting, preparation of legal entity financial statements, audits and other ad hoc reporting
  • Timely and accurate monthly reporting
  • Review and approve monthly financial results
  • Assist with preparation of internal management reporting package
  • Cash management

Budget and Strategic Plan

  • Develop, communicate, and monitor annual budget timelines
  • Facilitate quarterly forecast process for the relevant real estate assets
  • Assist in the preparation of the Strategic and Operating Plans through working with Property Managers and Asset Managers

Tax and Compliance

  • Review and approve tax financial statements in accordance with Corporate Secretariat procedures
  • Assist in the review of tax provisions, as required (including HST returns as required)
  • Review lender compliance
  • Establish processes and systems to support the North American management platform
  • Act as key contact for the portfolio’s stakeholders
  • Coordinate annual and interim audit procedures with external auditors and internal audit group
  • Assist with the preparation of annual audited and reviewed financial statements
  • Other special projects as required
  • Oversee the A/R Control function and manage the Lease Analysis team
  • Manage tenant queries, lease review and interpretations as needed
  • Participate in transactions including acquisitions and dispositions as required
  • Determine appropriate accounting treatment for acquisitions, dispositions and reorganizations
  • Integrate new properties into client’ accounting and reporting platform
  • Lead, develop, motivate team of 20 team

About You

  • CPA designation
  • Minimum of ten total years of experience
  • Minimum of 5 years industry experience
  • IFRS experience is preferred
  • Strong analytical, technical accounting, interpersonal skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Dedication to accuracy and timeliness
  • Ability to prioritize with an appropriate sense of urgency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and build relationships across all levels within, as well as outside the organization
  • Independent, self-starter, who also works well in a team based environment
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to manage conflicting priorities within structured deadlines and deliverables
  • Experience with the integration of all accounting related activities on property acquisitions
  • Ideally the candidate has at least 4 years in public practice at a Big Four firm
  • JDE experience is an asset

Salary Range
$130,000-$160,000/year
